Group paintball

There's nothing quite like sharing high-speed projectiles with your fellow lab members to really bring a group together.  The Caltech Nanofab Group had such a great time at paintball this past weekend that Kate even suggested we make it a monthly event!  As fun as that sounds, there's concern this is merely a poorly masked ploy to "manage" anyone who owes her travel receipts.

The Caltech Nanofabrication Group woud like to congratulate Jingqing Huang on her successful thesis defense!

Jingqing's research explored the ultimate scaling limits of semiconductor lasers, utilizing novel structures and developing ultra-high precision fabrication techniques to combat the oppresive limits imposed by thermal resistance, optimize directional out-coupling efficiency, enable continuous-wave room temperature lasing, and provide a future path for integrated, electrically-pumped nanolasers.  Her work on metal-bonded photonic crystal lasers and cavities defined in optically thick slabs will prove invaluable in the years to come and am important milestone in our drive for smaller, faster optoelectronics.  We will sorely miss her intelligence, enthusiasm, mentorship, wit and humor in the lab, and although we weigh her departure with a heavy heart, we anticipate great things in her future.    Best wishes to JQ in all of her endeavors, and we can all look forward to catching up at conference or perhaps in the high Sierras!
